“Slams” – Islamic neighbourhoods in Capetown

Researching Arabic Afrikaans, the first orthography to represent the Afrikaans language and came across the term slams, a slang for Islamic neighbourhoods of Cape Town in the 1860s. From what I understand, this was used my locals.

Interesting term. There’s a sports league for basketball and ball hockey in Toronto known as “I-slam.” Here, the word “slam” in (I-slam) is a play on “Islam” but also refers to a ball being dunked or slammed in. Pretty neat eh?
